the Jewish people are the chosen people.

Jesus Christ is the son of God.  Jesus Christ is God.

there is no God but God and Muhammed is God’s messenger.

Brahma is creator, Vishnu is sustainer and Shiva is destroyer.

Ganesha removes obstacles.

Ganesha provides obstacles.

Mary is the Mother of God.  yes, God has a Mother.  a woman gave birth to God.

in the beginning, before God was born, a woman, with no man involved gave birth to God.

so who’s the Father?  who cares?

the Great Spirit blesses us with the rivers and the fish and the corn at harvest.

everything is illusion.  we are all one.

we are not the same.

there is no god.

only God.

we are ourselves alone we are not here.

amen.

so why do I get mad when I don’t get my way?

why am I so afraid that this is all not going to work out?

and why do I continue to fall back into the bottomless pit of believing this shit is all up to me?

in short;  Oh Great Nothingness, why am I such a selfish, hypocritical, weak and lazy idiot?

what is the greed behind this self-flagellation?  what is the game?

***

Ayad said something, quoted somebody, saying something about trauma having to do with an inability to articulate the traumatic event.

I am having trouble articulating these days.

my brain is failing me.  as is my body.  as are my good looks.

surely, there must be something lighter to turn to.  something more solid.

something more to do with nothing.

surely, there must, at least, be Nothing.

***

it’s monday morning.  my day off.  in the last half hour, I am hearing the city waking below me.
image

the light brings all this activity.

this agreement to work.

it’s really quite fascinating.

***

"grace and gratitude go together like heaven and earth."

all the good words;  love.  mercy.  humility.  courage.  patience.

kindness.

and why am I so prone to anger?

I think I have this belief that every time anger rises up in me, I am Jesus trying to expel the money changers from the Temple.

my house is a house of prayer and you have made it a den of thieves.

where does my arrogance come from?

that I have the audacity to identify myself not as one of the thieves but as Jesus.

the righteous one.

when it is crystal clear that I am just one of the greedy, frightened, desperate, ambitious thieves.

just another bozo on the bus.

oh Mother God, help me to participate in your creation.

to be what I am.

amidst all the controversy to be good.

***

I know nobody cares that I am at the center of the universe.

way up high on this island at the center of the world.

image

still buried in my arrogance, 37 floors up from 56th and 8th.

Carnegie Hall below.  also a Chipotle with high ceilings.

some fat and sullen door men.  dressed like monkeys from the wizard of oz.

time to go say hello.

still am.

***

seriously, what are we fighting for?

***

we are 3 days shy of moving in to the theater.

the changes to the script are significant and good.

***

such an unique experience to have done this play (a form of this play) on a different stage with different people.

in a different time (2 months ago).

the essence to thriving in the theater is in the letting go.

true you can never step twice in the same river.

this THE WHO AND THE WHAT is a different river.

Allahu Akhbar.

and love,

Bernie

,

family,

c’mon.  let us welcome the bloody convert.  why not?!?

http://www.suhaibwebb.com/islam-studies/islam-101/misconceptions/8-things-you-should-understand-about-converts/

Nadine sent me a debate between Zeba Khan and Maajid Nawaz versus Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Douglas Murray.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUGmv5TGaTc

the topic is IS ISLAM A RELIGION OF PEACE.

it’s a debate between the who and the what.  the spirit and the flesh.  the “story” and the “facts”.

that black woman, Ayaan Hirsi Ali and that witty goyim, Douglas Murray are obsessed with the what, the flesh, the facts.

in my humble opinion.

Zeba and Maajid embody the who.  you can see it in their eyes.

***

I’m somehow reminded of the song my family would sing in church.

"and they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love and they’ll know we are Christians by our love."

image

***

oh what we muslims have to put up with by way of judgement and prejudice and ignorance.

such ignorance.

"and they’ll know we are Muslims by our love, by our love and they’ll know we are Muslims by our love."

***

Islam does not need a fake “reform movement” under whose banner the sheep can hide.

the reform takes place in the heart of the individual.  it’s an inside job.

perhaps a little messier without a pope.

no need to go ruining beautiful church or mosque doors with nails and new laws and decrees mandating tolerance.

Martin Luther was overrated.  just another one of those power hungry egotists playing God like the rest of us.

the real reformer in the Catholic Church was St. Francis of Assisi.  who stayed a Catholic.  as Thomas Merton did.

they are quiet Muslims. (so quiet they called themselves catholic)  they liked birds and sang the sensuality of the sunrise.  peaceful Sufis.

Yusef Islam (Cat Stevens) is the Muslim Reformation in action, in spirit and in the flesh.

Hafiz, Rumi, the Sufi’s are the Muslim Reformation.

the millions and millions of devout Muslims who believe truly that there is no god but God and Muhammed is (one of) his messenger(s) are the Reformation.

***

but I get it.  religion is a flawed broken down vehicle in which we attempt to carry the word of God.

and the wonderful secular elite (obsessed with the what) in what seems to me to be loud cynicism want to show we faithful how addicted to the opium of the masses we are.

Ayad Akhtar, in his next play, addresses the issue of the real opium of the masses.

yes, there’s a part of me that believes the Vatican should be destroyed.

I am invested in and inspired by Jesus’s advice to the Samaritan woman in John 4:21;

"believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem."

Jesus continued;

"Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship Allah in the Spirit and in truth…"

the who.

the evolution from the what.

out of time.

image

the time is coming.  is here.

we don’t need no stinking reformation.

I am a proud Muslim.  Islam is my faith.

Islam was already the reformation.  as Christianity was before it.  they are reform branches of Judaism.

Jesus and Muhammed were just good Jews;  individuals just trying to get it right.  trying to purify themselves in the faith.

succeeding in some areas, failing in others.

Allahu Akhbar.

al hamdulliah.

shalom.

B’ezrat Hashem.

and love,

Bernie

yesterday, Jackie and I recited e.e. cummings poems to a small crowd gathered under the Arch in Washington Square.

afterward, we heard a woodpecker.  we followed the sound and saw the woodpecker.

about 100 yards from the cherry blossoms, where we sat on the carpet of petals and read more e.e. cummings.

sound too precious?

it was just precious enough.

James Lecesne seems to always have good people around him.

salat al magrib.

sunset on my mother’s birthday.

thank you mom.

***

the view from the balcony of our beautiful apartment where Lincoln Center is housing me includes the Hudson River and Pier 88, where 54 years ago on May 3, 1960 my family arrived in America from Sri Lanka.

the 9 of us stepped off the Queen Mary.  still high from seeing the Statue of Liberty for the first time.

well actually 8 of us stepped off.  at 10 months old, I was carried off by my sister, Dawn.

I was still high from being born.

Dawn passed away during the run of THE WHO AND THE WHAT at La Jolla.

I am grateful my father brought us all to America.

it’s good to be back where we landed.

this is Lincoln Center around the time we arrived.

Bismillah.  we begin rehearsals in the morning.   continuing construction.

continuing on with my father and mother and Dawn.  without my father and mother and Dawn.

my new family begins rehearsal in the morning.

ready to do battle with the devil king of the 6th Heaven.

I welcome the 3 obstacles and 4 devils.  I thank them in advance.

Precious Lord, take my hand, lead me on, help me stand…

and so we begin in continuance

and love,

Bernie
